A pretty little flower

Post image for A pretty little flower

Last fall when we had kiddos staying with us, I decided to construct a raised bed by the back door to peak their interest in gardening. We headed out to the feed store for a few plants. My idea was to have fresh herbs and a few veggies. The girls spotted these Dianthus, it was the end of my herb patch. In fairness, it was “their” garden. Although I tried to explain the flowers were not edible; no matter, they just kept latching onto the six-packs. (Little flower drunkards!)

When the girls went home mid-September, the garden became abandoned. Oh sure I walked by each day, ignoring those silly little flowers “how dare they be in my edible garden?” Go ahead and die then I can return to my original plan.

The Dianthus would not cooperate. With no water other than what fell from the skies, through a snow and freezing temperatures they have prevailed into a pretty row of constant blooms.

dianthusBeaten by the hardy little devils! I’ve succumbed to planting a few nasturtiums amongst them for an edible flower.

Now I’m off to paint the farm stand! I can hardly wait for you to see it!

enjoy your day,
ang.

Every time I see these flowers, I think, “Mmm…peppermint candy.”

Hey, Farmer Girl,

No matter what you plant, it ALL looks sooo good! I love the pretty flowers. They are there to greet you every morning just to say “hi” and have a wonderful day! Is the farm stand blue? My personal fav color. Stop by and have a cup of coffee with me & Bob if you ever have a minute to spare. That’s probably not going to happen for a while now. You are getting very busy. Keep up the good work. I love all your cute things on your web site. What a smart girl you are! I’m very proud of you!
Love,

Now if you would’ve coddled those flowers, they would have all died! Funny how that happens!

It looks like the kids picked a good, hardy flower! I’m hoping to grown some herbs this year. I’ve never tried it before!

Um, ang, Dianthus flowers are edible! They’re supposed to taste like clove.

OH i can’t wait to see the farm stand!! I hope it will be a fantastic farm stand red!! Or maybe yellow, yes, yellow!! Oh I can’t wait to see it.

Look at you, growing flowers with out even trying. You should see my pathetic landscaping, sigh…..everything dies, and I try to help it grow!!

The garden is being planted tonight, better late than never……

Such nice flowers. I think I have one Crocus – an orange one. Good luck with the painting!

Umm….I’m pretty sure they’re edible girl. The also remind me of my grandma’s old avon lipstick samples when they first start budding. They are hardy, we have them here too. They come back every year all on their own. Gotta love their tenacity! ;)
